Fairmont Château Laurier

Reflecting the confidence, dignity and style of
Ottawa, Fairmont Château Laurier stands as a testament to this dynamic,
thriving city. Located in the heart of Canada's capital next door to the
Parliament Buildings, the landmark Fairmont Château Laurier is a magnificent
limestone edifice with turrets and masonry reminiscent of a French château.
Summer or winter, we make healthy activities simple. The Rideau Canal
offers miles of bicycle and inline skating paths and the world's longest
skating rink just outside our door. The nearby Gatineau Hills offer great
hiking, biking and canoeing, and in the winter, cross-country ski trails
and excellent downhill thrills.
With Winterlude, the Tulip Festival and countless other festivals, Ottawa
is a flurry of activity. Once you've taken in the wealth of sights, drop
by the Health Club or satisfy your appetite at one of the hotel's superb
Restaurants. Revel in the distinctive hospitality of Fairmont Château
Laurier - your stay is guaranteed to be a memorable one.

Hotel History
As the centerpiece of Canada's capital, Fairmont Château Laurier rests
majestically between Parliament Hill, the Ottawa River, The Congress Centre
and the open-air Byward Market. A historical monument in itself, the hotel
enchants guests with its charm and stateliness. Brass stair rails, marble
floors, high ceilings, antiques resting elegantly in rooms and foyers
and wool carpets round out the hotel's regal beauty.
In 1907, during a time of grandeur and elegance, Ottawa's premier hotel
was commissioned by American-born Charles Melville Hays, General Manager
of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway of Canada. Following a disagreement
with architect Bradford Lee Gilbert, Ross and Macfarlane Contractors was
hired to build the hotel in French Renaissance style using granite blocks
for the base, buff Indiana limestone for the walls and copper for the
roof.
Unfortunately, Hays never had the chance to see his dream come true. Days
before the hotel's scheduled opening on April 26, 1912, the new president
of the railway was returning from England with dining room furniture,
on the ill-fated Titanic. Hays and the male members of his party perished
on April 14, 1912. Only Paul Chevre, who sculpted the bust of Prime Minister
Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and the women in Hays' party, including his wife
Clara, survived the disaster.
Fairmont Château Laurier was eventually opened by its namesake, Sir Wilfrid
Laurier, on June 12, 1912. At that time, Ottawa was not the refined town
it is today as it reflected its rough Bytown origins. Fairmont Château
Laurier changed that and was once dubbed 'the third chamber of Parliament'
in reference to the number of politicians roaming the corridors. In its
rooms, political deals were made, careers launched or destroyed and governments
created and dissolved.
Two films have been shot at the hotel, including Captains of the Clouds,
starring James Cagney, and the more recent 1982 made-for-TV movie Little
Gloria: Happy at Last, featuring Christopher Plummer. The star-studded
guest list at Fairmont Château Laurier includes Shirley Temple, Nelson
Eddy, Greer Garson, Harry Belafonte, Marlene Deitrich, Rich Little, Billy
Bishop, Karen Kain, Roger Moore, Bryan Adams, Nelson Mandela, Carrie Fisher
and almost every star of stage, screen or music that has performed in
Ottawa.

John By in 1826, the ByWard Market is one of Canada's oldest and

George Street and York Street to be extra wide to accommodate the
creation of a public market and gathering place. Within an area
roughly four blocks square, you'll find museums, cafés, specialty
food shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants, pubs, hair &
aesthetics salons and more! Easily accessible on foot, one block

Canadian symbols are as well known as the Parliament Buildings.
Flanked by the East and West blocks, the Centre Block of Parliament

Canadians and people around the world. Although the buildings are
alive with the drama of modern day debates, the echoes of times
and personalities long since past still linger there. Each year,
thousands of people take free guided tours of the Centre Block.
When the Senate or the House of Commons is sitting, visitors can
watch the action from the galleries while an audio guide explains
the key players and activities. Special rooms in the East Block,
recreated to look as they did in Sir John A. Macdonald's time, are
also open to the public in the summer. Outdoor walking tours, self-guiding
booklets, sound and light shows and the Changing the Guard ceremony
are just some of the activities that feature the history and majesty
of the Parliament Buildings. Parliament Hill is located next to
Fairmont Château Laurier. |

of the Capital's most popular recreational areas. In the summer,

your guests quickly and creatively.
Over the years, Fairmont Chateau Laurier has served as the stately home-away-from-home
to politicians and visiting royalty alike. With a variety of multi-purpose
meeting and conference rooms, your group will be spurred on to productivity
and enthralled by the surroundings.
For outside activities and events, Fairmont Chateau Laurier is perfectly
situated in the heart of the capital, on the shores of the Rideau Canal,
and within walking distance to the National Arts Centre, the National
Art Gallery and the Ottawa Congress Centre.
